The simple, beautiful hand expressions called mudras, play a vital but subtle role in the yoga tradition. There are hundreds of mudras, each meant to express or bring forth a quality state of mind such as fearlessness, strength or groundedness. They are believed to have a therapeutic effect, helping to restore and heal imbalances, eliminating excess tension, strengthening weak immunity and addressing aches and pains.
The word mudra which means “seal” in Sanskrit, comes from two words: mud (to delight or pleasure) and dru (to draw forth. One of the simplest expressions of prayer, mudras represent the connection between the tangible and the ethereal.
